The famous Treetops hotel started life in a very humble way. In 1932 its first visitors gingerly climbed the wild fig tree supporting the two room tree house. By 1952, Treetops had expanded. Now a four room construction, Treetops welcomed, in February of the same year, its most famous visitor.A young English girl climbed the tree as a Princess one afternoon, to descend the following morning Queen Elizabeth I I - her father, King George VI had died during the night. By now, Treetops lodge reputation had spread far and wide and for the globetrotter, the rich, the famous and the fashionable no safari in Kenya was regarded was complete without experiencing the Treetops hotel adventure. Even today, with all the exciting safari lodges and camps Kenya has to offer, 50 room Treetops hotel heads the list for many tourist.
Aberdare National Park:
The Aberdare National Park was created in 1950 to protect the forested slopes and moors of the Aberdare Mountains. While the park has elephant, lion, rhino, black leopard and the beautiful but elusive bongo antelope, it is rarely visited by safari companies and individual travellers. There are a number of reasons for this, one is that the high rainfall turns the roads to mudslides and you need a 4x4 to get anywhere, and as a result the park often closes in the wet season. Added to this is the dense forest, which makes game viewing tricky. Lastly, other than campsites with minimal facilities, the only accommodation is at two very expensive tree lodges.
The lodges are also the main attraction of the Aberdare. Both Treetops and The Ark are built above the ground beside floodlit waterholes with salt licks. Visitors must book in advance and cannot make their own way to the lodges in private vehicles. Instead check-in is at the Aberdare Country club for The Ark and the Outspan Hotel for Treetops and they bus you to the lodge. Treetops is one of Kenya's most famous hotels as this is where British Princess Elizabeth was informed that she was now Queen in 1952 when her father died. The Ark, however, offers better game viewing, especially at night.
ACCESS:
By Road
The park is readily accessible on tarmac from Nyeri and Naro Moru on the eastern side and it’s 150 Kms from Nairobi. A road crosses the park through the lower slopes upto the Moorlands to connect with another on e from Naivasha on the western side. Naivasha is 87 Kms from Nairobi .
Lake Nakuru National Park – Birdwatcher’s Paradise
The park lies in Central Kenya, 140km north-west of Nairobi, in Nakuru district of the Rift Valley Province. The ecosystem comprises of the lake, surrounded by mainly wooded and bushy grasslands. The park supports a wide ecological diversity with Flamingos (Greater and Lesser) and other water birds being the major attractions of the area. The ecosystem provides for about 56 different species of mammals including the white rhino and buffaloes and a variety of terrestrial birds numbering nearly 450 species.
Masai Mara Game Reserve-Annual Wildebeest migration and home to the Big five
South Western Kenya is the heartland of the Masai. At the heart of these lands is the Masai Mara Game Reserve, widely considered to be Africa’s greatest wildlife reserve. The Mara comprises 200 sq miles of open plains, woodlands and riverine forest. Contiguous with the plains of the Serengeti, the Mara is home to a breathtaking array of life. The vast grassland plains are scattered with herds of Zebra, Giraffe, Gazelle, and Topi. The Acacia forests abound with Birdlife and Monkeys. Elephants and Buffalo wallow in the wide Musiara Swamp. The Mara and Talek rivers are brimming with Hippos and Crocodiles.
The Masai Mara is Kenya's most celebrated game park, it offers the possibility of seeing "the big five" and many other species of game. Each year the Mara plays host to the world’s greatest natural spectacle, the Great Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti. From July to October, the promise of rain and fresh life giving grass in the north brings more than 1.3 million Wildebeest together into a single massive herd. They pour across the border into the Mara, making a spectacular entrance in a surging column of life that stretches from horizon to horizon. At the Mara River they mass together on the banks before finally plunging forward through the raging waters, creating a frenzy as they fight against swift currents and waiting crocodiles.
The wildebeest bring new life to the Mara, not just through their cycle of regeneration of the grasslands, but for the predators who follow the herds.
